Lapta, North Cyprus
North Cyprus is known as one of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets. The Turkish part of the island is relatively un-commercialised and has a laid-back atmosphere, which is perfect for a relaxing holiday. The Five Finger mountains run along the north coast, and provide a magnificent backdrop for the picture-postcard unspoilt villages and beaches dotted along the Mediterranean. Travel One’s chosen hotel is located just outside the sleepy village of Lapta, some 10 miles west of the harbour town of Kyrenia, known locally as Girne. Kyrenia boasts an attractive horseshoe-shaped harbour, dominated to one side by an impressive castle. This part of the island is full of fascinating history to explore. It’s very easy to get around as car hire is inexpensive and they drive on the left, the same as in the UK. There are also some dolmus – shared minibus – services in and out of Kyrenia. Take a trip to see the mountain-top Crusader castles of St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara and explore the ancient Greco-Roman city of Salamis.

With its stunning interior dominated by the Five Finger mountains and with a string of picture postcard, unspoilt villages and beaches dotted along its picturesque coast, North Cyprus is, without doubt, a gem of a destination just waiting to be ‘discovered’. The picturesque village of Lapta, where our hotel is located, is just 10 miles from Kyrenia and is full of atmosphere and local life whilst either side of the town you will find lovely beaches and rocky coves.
It’s very easy to get around as car hire is inexpensive (and you drive on the left side of the road). There’s a sense of history and culture everywhere you look with ancient settlements, churches and castles to explore and, of course, the scenery is stunningly beautiful. It’s amazingly friendly, easy on the pocket, blissfully uncommercial and highly recommended.
